 Aint This a...
« Thread Started on Nov 3, 2009, 8:35pm »

So Ive had a Playstation 3 for around 3 years more or less, and everything has been going fine (aside from the occasionally annoying pain in the butt game sequences), and about 2 weeks ago it suddenly stopped working.

I was playing inFamous, and the game froze. So I shut it off, restarted the system and tried to resume play. This time, I played for about 2 seconds of the game and the system shut off by itself.

I thought... 'wtf?'

Again, I tried to turn the system back on, but it would only stay on for about 2 seconds and shut back off again (no booting, nothing).

Again, "wtf?"

It is now stuck like that. After doing some reasearch, I found that its probably caused by the system overheating and causing solder to melt and disconnect something. Since I dont have the tools or the minor skill to fix it w/o doing even more damage my only other option is to buy a new system.

You would think that would solve my problems, right? No. See, the hard drive I have for the PS3 is still good, yet it wont transfer the files if I just put it in the new PS3, since as it is first used in a particular system, it is encrypted to ONLY be used by THAT system (Im assuming to prevent piracy). When inserted into a new system, the system must format the hard drive, erasing everything on it.

...a lot more "wtf?"

The PS3 has a backup/restore feature for when you change out the hard drive so you dont lose anything. But, of course, the system must work at least long enough to back up the hard drive to an external drive (which can ONLY be done on its native system, not another one, not a PC).

I have nearly 3 years worth of game saves, trailers, download content, game progress, etc...

Info I cannot retrieve or restore.

And now it has all been for nothing.

Wow, sounds like a lot of trouble. Hope something works out for you. I much prefer 3k PC's for games even though I'm not into gaming. IMO better flexibility with migrating/restoring/backups.

That's a drag, you should still be able to send it in the broken one and get it fixed for a price (if it's out of warranty). Usually by 'fixing' it, if it's really borked it means they'll just transfer your stuff on the HD to a refurbished system and give it to you.

The other game companies (microsoft, nintendo) do this as well.

Sometimes the repair prices run pretty high and you are better off getting a new system, but that HD thing presents a problem. Maybe you can call sony and see if their is a certified repair shop nearby? Maybe they'll do the HD transfer. DRM is probably why they don't want you to copy the stuff over but they can override that. I don't know if sony has a repair center scheme but I know nintendo does have 'repair' certified places you can take your system to..

I have a wii and a 360 myself (latest model, "jasper" so hopefully I won't have to worry about RROD problems)

I'd definitely send it in as Nick suggested, since the stored content sounds like it is worth the extra cost. I wonder if the drive could be hooked up to a PC and you could retrieve the stuff that way.

Mine did the same thing and it was the power converter, it shuts off because it gets overloaded. I had a friend of mine fix it for me. He also refurbished my NES system from 1986, and atari jag., sega cd and he mods all my systems to paly the Jap games.

@ blackorchidx - actually, the service fee alone is $150, + shipping and tax.

I found a website that "specializes" in repairing ps3's and they're the "no. 1 refurbishing company in the country." I emailed them for a repair quote and they said they "no longer service ps3's due to problems sourcing replacement parts..." I was then told to send it to Sony because the websites repair costs would be 'uneconomical' and that Sony would give me a better deal.

I know if I send it to sony I wouldn't get my system back because I have the original 20gb model which they longer support. I would probably get one of the newer ones that don't have the same features.

I asked Sony if there was a way to get the data off the HD and they told me that the HD would automatically be formatted when put on the new system. I assume if they could have fixed it and got the data out they would have told me...

But who knows, I've heard how useless Sony can be with their "service"

You're going to love this.

I bought another used PS3 on eBay (a 60gb model), as I figured that was my best option. I waited for about a week for it only to find out that it was "damaged during shipping." I got a quick refund and looked for yet another one.

It was shipped in a few days but of course I wasn't there to sign for the delivery so they brought it back to the warehouse. After talking to a few a people I managed to arrange a pickup at the warehouse (which was about a half hour away).

I finally get the system, drive back home, set it up and turn it on. There's no picture. No big deal, they're always auto-set for the regular a/v cable settings (I'm using HDMI). So I hold the button to switch to hdmi...messed up picture.

...WTF?

I restarted the system to try again, but the picture was still messed up. Somehow I got it working and I started adjusting the settings and stuff. I put in assassins creed and tried installing it.

It froze.

I restarted the system and got the yellow light of death ( the problem I was havin before). So I shut it off and waited for a minutes for the system to cool off. I turned it on and it worked. I tried playing again but the game didn't work because it froze during installation so I had to delete it, restarted, and try again.

Now, it goes back to displaying no picture. I try restarting and get the yellow light of death again. I restart again and get no picture.

So I just got another broken PS3.

I hate eBay. So I sent the system back and just bought a brand new 120gb from toys r us. Now I have a working system.

For now...
